The Nationals (38-65) extended their losing streak to 4 games with a 3-2 loss to the Dodgers (50-52) in Los Angeles.  Washington has only won 3 road games since the middle of June following their sweep of the Mariners in Seattle.

The Dodgers will host the second game of the weekend series tonight at 10:10 pm est at Dodger Stadium. In the “City of Angels,” the Nationals require a miracle to turn around this series and this franchise. It has to begin here, and it must begin now… “Let’s Go ‘Nats!”

LOS ANGELES, July 25 — The value of Lastings Milledge‘s return from the disabled list Friday could be measured by his spot in the lineup, his spot in the outfield or his spot in the future.

After missing 20 games with a groin injury, Milledge rejoined the Washington Nationals for Friday’s game and immediately helped on several fronts: The team received a No. 6 hitter and regained its center fielder, somebody who started that position in 79 of Washington’s first 82 games.

I have seen Brennan play in person a couple of times of the last several years. This kid is the real deal. I thoroughly enjoyed this article from The Times.  He our 6th Round Rookie choice from Hawaii who owns 31 NCAA records, placed third in the run for the Heisman Trophy, and was a finalist for the Johnny Unitas Award. I am looking forward to see what kind of professional game he can show the Beltway compared to how he played on the Pipeline.

Hopefully this man will turn out to be a warrior, and not a rainbow…

The Mystics were not so hospitable as they marched into ‘Hotlanta and defeated the Dream last night by a score of 81-75. Mystics’ center, Taj McWilliams-Franklin led the Mystics with 13 points, 12 rebounds, and 5 assists in almost 32 minutes of playing time.

For the 3 and 23 Dream, this season has been a complete and utter nightmare. You might want to wake up and smell the coffee. But hey, “There’s always next year.”

Nice job tonight ladies. Impressive victory. Next game will be on Sunday at the Verizon Center at 4:00 pm against the Connecticut Sun.

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - With the start of preseason camp just more than a week away, the Maryland football team recently culminated 12 weeks of summer workouts by undergoing strength and conditioning testing.

Director of strength and conditioning Dwight Galt oversaw testing of strength index, power clean, squat, bench press, vertical jump, and conditioning for more than 100 players as they prepare for the rapidly-approaching 2008 football season.

Offensive lineman Phil Costa set an all-time team record with a clean from the floor of 435 pounds, and defensive lineman Dean Muhtadi power cleaned 390 pounds, a record for his position. Offensive lineman Bruce Campbell, only a sophomore, posted one of the most impressive bench presses by lifting 455 pounds – a 35-pound improvement from spring.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Washington Nationals shortstop Cristian Guzman agreed to terms Tuesday on a $16 million, two-year contract extension that takes him through the 2010 season.

He appreciated the vote of confidence by his club, especially after making his second All-Star game and first since 2001. Guzman, who will earn $8 million in each of the next two seasons, could have opted to test free agency this fall.

A power outage at RFK Stadium forced yesterday’s D.C. United game against the Houston Dynamo to be rescheduled for 7:30 tonight, marking the second time in United’s 13-year history — and the second time this season — a home game has been postponed.

Yesterday’s game was supposed to be the makeup of a June 4 game against Houston, which was suspended because of severe weather after 15 minutes of scoreless play. Tickets from June 4 or yesterday will be honored tonight.

News Release from Washington Capitals: Capitals to Open Training Camp September 20th

ARLINGTON, VA., – The Washington Capitals’ 2008 training camp will open Saturday, Sept. 20, at Kettler Capitals Iceplex in Arlington, Va. A group of the team’s young players and prospects will take part in rookie camp the week prior to the start of training camp, with those workouts beginning Sunday, Sept. 14. All on-ice sessions during rookie camp and training camp are open to the public and free of charge.

Rookie camp will conclude with a game against the Philadelphia Flyers rookies on Thursday, Sept. 18, at 3 p.m. at Kettler Capitals Iceplex. The game will be free of charge but will require a ticket – the Capitals will announce details on obtaining tickets at a later date.

Several special events and promotions will be featured throughout training camp. A full schedule of those events, practice times and rosters for both camps will be released in the coming weeks.

WASHINGTON (AP) -Tiffany Jackson came off the bench to score a team-high 14 points as the New York Liberty beat the Washington Mystics 80-73 on Wednesday.

Jackson’s basket gave the Liberty a 73-69 lead with about a minute to play, and her free throw with 25.2 left put them up 76-71.

Loree Moore added 10 points and was the only New York starter in double figures.

Where: RFK Memorial Stadium, Washington,D.C.

The Gist: Making up a match that was rained out in early June, Houston has a chance to beat United for the second time in four days. The Dynamo were convincing in a 3-1 win on Saturday night that ended group play for both teams in SuperLiga, knocking United out of the tournament in the process. However, D.C. will welcome back Jaime Moreno and Gonzalo Martinez into the starting lineup. Those two may not be enough as United, who were just hitting stride when this match was originally scheduled, have lost their last three games, all at home, and did not look good in the last few wins prior to embarking on their losing ways.

Why You Should Care: Though rain will not prevent this game from happening again, the weather will still play a factor as the typical oppressive heat and humidity has descended on the nation’s capital. As United didn’t press for the win, rested a couple of players, and have been sleeping in their own beds they should be slightly fresher. However, up and down the roster the Dynamo have better players. Houston will miss Ricardo Clark due to suspension, but will still have the services of Patrick Ianni and Stuart Holden before the duo departs for the Olympics. With Dwayne De Rosario and Brian Ching up front, Houston should be able to score first, forcing United to play from behind as they did in all three SuperLiga games. United will have to used Jaime Moreno in an attacking midfield role as Marcelo Gallardo is sidelined and Fred will have to chip in from the flank in providing creative play. Though Luciano Emilio has cooled off after his red-hot June, Francis Doe is contributing, as the Liberian striker has scored in three of United’s last four games. For United to win, and grab three important points, Doe will have to be in form again, not an easy task going against Pat Onstad and the rest of the Dynamo defense

He’s So Hot Right Now: Brad Davis. The Houston midfielder was dangerous in Saturday’s tilt on set pieces, a typical weakness for United. Davis set up Ricardo Clark and Bobby Boswell on first half goals, effectively putting the game out of reach before halftime. Even with Moreno and Martinez back in the mix,Davis will still be dangerous all night.

Prediction: Houston Dynamo 2, D.C. United 1

The North & South Amateur Championship will be held on Sunday, July 20. Curtis will face 19-year-old Australian Kristie Smith, who posted a 3 & 2 win over Furman’s Blair Lamb.

Curtis played steady all day against LaCrosse, a recent graduate of Louisville, to win today’s match 5&4.

Friedgen Addresses Media at ACC Football Kickoff

GREENSBORO, Ga. - Maryland head coach Ralph Friedgen entertained members of the local, regional and national media for more than three hours Monday during the second day of the 2008 ACC Football Kickoff at Reynolds Plantation.

The annual event concludes Tuesday with a football forum presided over by ACC Commissioner John Swofford. Two players from each of the 12 teams took part in the kickoff Sunday.

The Terps open preseason camp on Monday, Aug. 4, and the regular season on Saturday, Aug. 30 vs. Delaware.
