Nationals

From the Associated Press: Nationals SS Guzman agrees to 2-year extension

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Washington Nationals shortstop Cristian Guzman agreed to terms Tuesday on a $16 million, two-year contract extension that takes him through the 2010 season.

He appreciated the vote of confidence by his club, especially after making his second All-Star game and first since 2001. Guzman, who will earn $8 million in each of the next two seasons, could have opted to test free agency this fall.

The Nats (38-62) are still 16 games back after a 6-3 loss to the Giants (41-58) in San Francisco. Rematch tonight in the Bay City will feature a refreshed Ryan Zimmerman back for his first game off the disabled list. Game will be tonight at 10:15 est at AT&T Park.

Redskins

From the National Post of Canada: ‘Skins Place Players in Injured Reserves

The Washington Redskins on Tuesday placed defensive ends Phillip Daniels and Alex Buzbee on injured reserve.

Both players were injured on the first day of training camp Sunday, leading to the trade with the Miami Dolphins for Pro Bowler Jason Taylor.

From the Washington Post: Power Outage Pushes Game Back Until Tonight

A power outage at RFK Stadium forced yesterday’s D.C. United game against the Houston Dynamo to be rescheduled for 7:30 tonight, marking the second time in United’s 13-year history — and the second time this season — a home game has been postponed.

Yesterday’s game was supposed to be the makeup of a June 4 game against Houston, which was suspended because of severe weather after 15 minutes of scoreless play. Tickets from June 4 or yesterday will be honored tonight.

News Release from Washington Capitals: Capitals to Open Training Camp September 20th

ARLINGTON, VA., – The Washington Capitals’ 2008 training camp will open Saturday, Sept. 20, at Kettler Capitals Iceplex in Arlington, Va. A group of the team’s young players and prospects will take part in rookie camp the week prior to the start of training camp, with those workouts beginning Sunday, Sept. 14. All on-ice sessions during rookie camp and training camp are open to the public and free of charge.

Rookie camp will conclude with a game against the Philadelphia Flyers rookies on Thursday, Sept. 18, at 3 p.m. at Kettler Capitals Iceplex. The game will be free of charge but will require a ticket – the Capitals will announce details on obtaining tickets at a later date.

Several special events and promotions will be featured throughout training camp. A full schedule of those events, practice times and rosters for both camps will be released in the coming weeks.

From USA Today: Arenas $111 Million Deal Leaves Wizards Cap Room

WASHINGTON — Washington Wizards owner Abe Pollin thought re-signing free agent Gilbert Arenas was almost a foregone conclusion. But the club’s celebration Tuesday as the All-Star guard spoke for the first time about his six-year, $111 million deal seemed to suggest otherwise.

“This is where I belong,” Arenas said. “This is where I need to be. This is where I need to finish my legacy.”

Mystics

From USA Today: Jackson scores 14 off bench in Liberty win

WASHINGTON (AP) -Tiffany Jackson came off the bench to score a team-high 14 points as the New York Liberty beat the Washington Mystics 80-73 on Wednesday.

Jackson’s basket gave the Liberty a 73-69 lead with about a minute to play, and her free throw with 25.2 left put them up 76-71.

Loree Moore added 10 points and was the only New York starter in double figures.
